Interactive Processes for Receiving Accommodation Letters
Faculty play a critical role in the interactive accommodations process as guided by the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Students requesting accommodations will participate in an interactive accommodations request process and receive an official letter of Accommodations provided by the Accessibility Services Director. From there, the student will initiate an interactive discussion with the professor. It is the professor’s role to engage this process, discussing with the student each accommodation, and creating a plan of implementation for the respective class. The Accessibility Services Director may be consulted to help provide guidance on what is reasonable given the nature of a particular course should questions arise. Faculty should consult with the Director of Accessibility Services at any point concern that an accommodation may fundamentally alter the the course, and may not deny the accommodation without consultation with the Accessibility Services Director.
